Liechtenstein 2026

A few days in the 6th smallest country in the world, and the 4th smallest in Europe. Mostly walking, often eating, definitely drinking. Between this place and Zürich where we flew in and out of, our bank accounts are absolutely still weeping in a corner.

BUDGET for one person (based on two sharing) for 3 nights, 4 days.
Accommodation: £133.50
Trains: £67.70 (train from airport in Zürich and back again)
Tours: £17.86
Groceries: £24.70
Eating out: £134.66
Booze: £24.55 (though we also drank whilst eating)
Entrance fees: £16.34
SIM card, phone credit: £11.70 (SimBye eSIM)
Souvenirs: £39.89
Everything else: £3.47

GRAND TOTAL: £474.37
Average per person per day: £118.59

Can it be done cheaper? Of course! There is one (and only one) backpacker hostel with shared dorms. No kitchen though. We probably could have spent less on booze and eating out, and definitely didn’t need that many souvenirs.

The Stories

Liechtenstein Day 1

We spent three nights in the 6th smallest country in the world. We flew into Zürich on account of Liechtenstein having exactly fuck all airports, caught a train to the border then bussed into the country and headed straight for the Hofkellerei des Fürsten…

Liechtenstein Day 2

Sleeping with the windows wide open to try and make sleeping in a furnace a little bit possible meant we were serenaded by the church bells next door throughout the night. Also it turns out that 5am is particularly exuberantly celebrated in Liechtenstein. Something…

Liechtenstein Day 3

If you’re not into walking you probably won’t find much to do in Liechtenstein but we’re really rather fond of dragging ourselves out of bed at obnoxious hours to go and upset our calf muscles in beautiful places. This is what we did today.…

Useful shit to know…

  • The language is Swiss German, but I believe standard German is also understood. We found English to be widely spoken at varying levels.
  • The currency is Swiss Francs.
  • The ATMs don’t appear to add a charge onto your withdrawals above what your bank charges you.
  • Card is very widely accepted. We only got cash out because we like currency as souvenirs, plus we knew we’d need some CHF to pay the walking tour guide we’d booked in Zürich.
  • If you’re staying overnight in Liechtenstein your hotel will email you a Welcome Adventure Pass. This is free, it’ll give you discounts at selected attractions, and it gives you free public transport all over Liechtenstein. This includes the buses over the border from Buchs and Sagrans.
  • You can upgrade to a paid version, the ALL INCLUSIVE Adventure Pass, that gets you free entry into selected attractions. You can buy that HERE.
  • Bussing around the country is a piece of piss. All the routes are on Google Maps and seem accurate.
  • You don’t need to show your Welcome Pass when you get on, you just board and they trust you have a ticket.
  • I did see people buying tickets on the bus too so that’s an option if you don’t have a Welcome Pass, or you can use the SBB app.
One of the green LIEmobil buses.
  • It’s easy enough to catch a train from Zürich airport to the border. You can use the SBB app to book it and you might need to change at the main train station.
  • There’s a direct train from the airport to Buchs SG at 23 minutes past the hour but it takes a long time and costs more than just getting to the Hauptbahnhof in Zürich then changing to catch a train to Sagrans.
